MUMBAI: The police have launched a manhunt for unidentified motorcyclists who reportedly threw acid on a 25-year-old woman while she was travelling in an autorickshaw on Tuesday. The incident took place in Dharavi at around 3.45 am when Jamuna Dera was returning to her Chembur home from Kherwadi.
An investigator said they suspect the crime was committted by someone known to the victim who works at a bar in Kherwadi . "It could be the victim's boyfriend or some customer who wanted to take revenge for an unknown reason."
The Dharavi police said Dera sustained 20% burns on her face and hands. A police officer said that minutes after the incident, Dera got herself admitted at Bhabha Hospital in Bandra.
"She did not notice the attackers . But, it seems the crime may have been committed by someone who knew her daily schedule," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone V) Aswati Dorje. The attackers, said Dorje, struck after Dera, who is employed at Sibbu Palace Bar and Restaurant in Bandra West, reached Dharavi. "Some of the acid fell on the auto driver, Vikas Kumar. But he managed to ride up to the hospital," Dorje said. Both Jamuna and Kumar could not note down the bike's number.
